Asus Eee PC 900HA Netbook Use Summary

NoteBook is too expensive and heavy for me. So I bought a Asus EeePC 900HA which also called NetBook in a local computer store in the end of April, 2009. I use this netbook as a full function notebook because I don’t play games basically. I have been using it more than a month, the feeling is good except the keyboard and screen is a bit small. I will record and share some use experience, welcome communication and advice.

The Specifications overview of Eee PC 900HA: Intel® Atom N270 CPU, 1G RAM, 160GB SATA Harddisk plus 10GB Eee Storage network storage disk, 8.9 inch screen, 30M inbuilt webcam, Eee PC 1.6 Linux OS which customized from Xandros, the detail of specifications of Eee PC 900HA see here. I bought it from local computer store with price RMB 2800 YUAN. I paid for change 1G RAM to 2G RAM with another RMB 100 YUAN (There is only one RAM slot in this machine). There are three kinds of OS in this netbook now: Eee PC 1.6 Linux come with hardware installed in /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2; Windows XPs in /dev/sda3, in Vmware Player and VirtualBox virtual machine software; Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix installed in /dev/sda5 with home partition /dev/sda7; /dev/sda8, /dev/sda10 are data partitions; /dev/sda6 is swap partition and /dev/sda9 is data backup partition.

I plan to write several diaries for this. I will write the title and summary for every diary below, add its URL once I finish one.

1, Use summary of Eee PC 1.6 Linux operating System which is the initial OS of Asus Eee PC 900HA of mine
The initial Operating System is Eee PC 1.6 Linux which customized from Xandros OS which based on Debian 4. It is a good when use it as a netbook only, but, it can’t fit my needs of using it as a full function notebook because its limited expandability caused by its high customization. I still think it as a representative of customized Linux and it is a good inspiration for people to develop Linux system.

2, Installation and use Ubuntu 9.04 on Eee PC 900HA
Introduce how to install and use Ubuntu 9.04 (include common desktop editition “Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Editition” and customized editition for netbook “Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix”. This is my most using OS on this netbook currently.

3, Installation and use Windows XP on Eee PC 900HA
Because I need to use this netbook as a full function notebook, Windows OS is necessary in today especially in our country-China (It is one of the reason why windows is occupying 90 percent desktop market). This diary will introduce how to install and use Windows XP on Eee PC 900HA. I am using QQ (a very popular instant messenger tools in China) for video chatting, download tool XunLei International Edition, online bank occasionally (because I can’t use it under Linux), and an english learning software “Kindness Learning Enlightenment” that has been free now;

4, Installation and use Debian Lenny on Eee PC 900HA
Introduce how to install and use Debian Lenny (5.0) on Eee PC 900HA.

5, Install and use virtual machine on Eee PC 900HA
I have been installing and using virtual machine softwares in Eee PC 1.6 Linux came with my netbook, Debian Lenny and Ubuntu 9.04. These virtual machine softwares include Vmware (Vmware Player) or VirtualBox. Of course, the experience of virtual machine can also be applied to common computer.

6, The current situation about Operating System on netbook
Those netbook producers such as Asus and Acer has been selling Windows netbook mainly now from all kinds of signs I got from network and reality. Netbook maybe will change to low end super light full function notebook. It is too difficult for Linux to compete with Windows. Where is the way of Linux and Open Source on desktop? I ask. May be, Linux shouldn’t compete with Windows painstakingly in total. But, it is Linux’s mission for providing another desktop Operating System to users. I think, Linux should not compete with Windows, it should focus at the users’ needs, digg users’ requirement, do the best as Linux can do. This diary should just collect some others’ ideas plus my few comments on them as my understanding of this question.

The first diary will be: Use summary of Eee PC 1.6 Linux operating System which is the initial OS of Asus Eee PC 900HA of mine.
